Stay one step ahead of scammers

Fraud and scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but protecting yourself doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. When you stay informed, it becomes much easier to pause, double‑check, and make sure something is genuine. Over time, these small checks add up to strong, safe habits that help keep your money secure.

Investment scams

Investment scams happen when someone tries to convince you to put your money into an opportunity that isn’t real. They can look very convincing, sometimes even copying the branding or style of investment firms, which can make them hard to spot.

They may have professional looking websites or documents that mimic real firms. In some cases they might make cold calls or send "exclusive offer" emails and texts that are "limited time only".

How to stay safe

  • Always check the firm's details directly on the FCA Register to confirm whether they're authorised
  • Be wary of unexpected investment offers such as higher interest rates - legitimate firms don't cold call
  • Type the firm's web address directly into your web browser rather than clicking on links in ads or messages
  • Never enter personal details into a website you do not feel confident in.

Points to remember:

  • Your bank would never advertise a rate that is not listed on their official website
  • All official websites have a padlock icon before the https:// in the browser link
  • Legitimate firms don't cold call to advertise new rates
  • If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Report a scam

If you are approached about a scam or you believe you are a victim of fraud, you should report it to the FCA (report a scam) scheme. Latest scam tactics can also be found on their website. You can also call the Consumer Helpline on 0800 111 6768.

If you have already paid money to fraudsters, you should contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
